Today, I finally get my Mclaren 675LT's engine back together, and with some great help from Jared, it looks better than new, and it may be a little faster than stock. Just a little.

  • I'd be tempted to just tack that piece of aluminum tube on and start stacking tacks. Spending an afternoon doing so with a LOT of breaks and maybe put a little ice on the nearby gasketed areas. Since with my luck that cover would warp being off the engine. Oh, BTW, that's not MIG, that's TIG.

  • You made a lot of work for yourself welding the water pump hose bib. You stick a rag down the tube before you cut the neck. You cut the neck and vacuum out the chips and pull the rag, fill the engine with water to 2 inches below the weld and stuf the rag back in and weld. The water pump won't get hot because it is filled with water. The yellow flame when welding is contamination.

  • Interesting you used a helicoil. Working on defense systems (Phalanx CIWS and M1A1 transmission), we never allowed them...they aren't strong enough in aluminum.

I worked at a welding shop all through college and I couldn't count the number of broken trans ears and other mounting features I've had to weld back onto transmissions.

    • @SoulFly Well if you're that annoyed maybe you should just flock off!! They did forget something tho didn't they and it went easily and they had to go back and start over? You've no idea who you even commented to and any understanding whatsoever of my experience. I know that you're likely a millennial or Gen X so you are clueless that there are actually many people on this planet who trump both yours and his experience combined but my comment is based on likely more years of empirical experience than you have years on this planet Jr...JFYI obviously his experience is not THAT in depth either based on the entire videos and that's ok too, he's taking the chance and stepping out of his comfort zone and putting it out there for everyone to see while learning which is why I made my comment, BTW who the fuck is "rando"?

  • Cheap horsepower? I bought a quadrajet intake manifold and a set of small block power pack heads from a 1966 283 corvette for $7.00 from one guy needing gas at the Shell station where I worked in 1976, (his prices, not mine), and a quadrajet carb from a 454 motorhome pulled at 5k miles for a Holly setup from another kid. I made a deal with a neighbor that if he paid for a valve job on my power packs and the gasket set, he could get my old stock 1968 307 heads reworked and I would install them on his 1968 van which had a broken exhaust valve in another 307. I swapped the #52 jets out of my 2 barrel carb for the №70s in the quadrajet, adjusted the coil spring tension on the secondary choke plates, put it all together, advanced the timing 10 degrees and started burning 95 octane premium, (at a whopping 56¢ a gallon), to adjust for the higher compression of the power packs and the .040 mill job to level the rusty surface of the heads. I rebuilt the entire top end of my engine for $12.00 in cash plus $5.95 for the quad rebuild kit. If I had more money, I would have invested in headers and a larger exhaust but at $2.30 an hour, hey, you do what you can. I estimate that what I did gave it an extra 50 horsepower but it was a learning experience to get it right the first time never doing it before then getting it right a second time on the van. That 68 Bel Aire with a powerglide trans wouldn't spin tires on an oil slick but at 30 MPH in low gear, it would top out the front shocks when I opened up the secondaries. This was back when I could get a rebuilt powerglide installed at Mr. Transmission for $149.00. I burned up 3 in 40,000 miles. In a 5 mile stretch, I actually beat a 1974 Olds 442 light to light. My tires wouldn't spin and he wouldn't keep his on the ground. I was half way to the next light every time he left the cross walk. If the idiot would have pedaled it a little, all I would have seen was tail lights. His thing was smoke and noise so he lost every time.

When you have that done and you have the $2000 worth of other parts you need from Summit racing to build the engine. You can easily build a 1500 hp monster motor for next to nothing.
